Love & Basketball: Nicole & Marc engaged!

When Nicole first approached me about her engagement session she wanted to know if I’d be willing to shoot indoors. They hate the cold and their neighborhood’s clubhouse had some really cool architecture so she wanted to do a session in there. She sent me a photo of the space and she was right! It was super cool and I was definitely down to photograph them in it. She was relieved becasue she said it was so hard to find photos of indoor sessions so she wasn’t sure how it would go. I reassured her that it would be awesome, and I think it’s safe to say (as I toot my own horn) that I was right! I just LOVE these photos! I had such fun getting to know this couple (who says they’re shy but totally warmed up in front of me so I don’t believe them!) and doing something different than the norm. I especially loved how they wanted to incorporate Marc’s love of basketball into the session. So much fun! Check out a few of my favorite images below!

Vendor Spotlight: Bridal Artistry

This week, I want to share with you an amazing hair & makeup company, Bridal Artistry! I’ve worked with the Bridal Artistry team for years and always been pleased with their results. Owner, Barbara Hill is an incredible woman who heads up the team and has made it her mission to transform brides on their wedding day. Check out what she had to say below:

Bridal Artistry’s vital info: Website - Email - Facebook - Twitter

Q: How did you get your start in weddings?

A: Following a 10 year career planning visits for foreign leaders through a Dept. of State exchange program, I wanted more flexibility for raising my children and using my creative talents. I started Bridal Artistry in 2001, and it has grown into  an amazing team of multi-ethnic makeup & hair professionals.

Q: Why did you want to be involved in weddings?

A: I enjoy the interaction with brides and their families on this most exciting of times and want to be a part of helping their vision become reality.

Q: What is one unique thing that your business brings to the table?

A: We are a team of 14 multi-ethnic hairstylists and makeup artists and, as such, we have done weddings of many cultural traditions and can handle large wedding parties.

Q: Describe your favorite type of client?

A: We love the brides who don’t wear much makeup and discover how even light makeup done right can make them feel both comfortable and beautiful on their Big Day!

Q: What wdding that you’ve done stands out the most to you and why?

A: We have done many “fusion weddings”, where very different religious and cultural traditions are blended in the clothing and ceremony.  It’s always very interesting and colorful.  With my international studies background, it  is something I enjoy.

Q: What inspires you?

A: Seeing brides happy with the way they look on their wedding day!  Being a part of creating the genuine joy of a bride feeling beautiful and confident on her wedding day keeps me going!

Q: What are the top services that your business provides?

A: On location makeup & hairstyling for weddings & special events - of all sizes.

Q: What is your best piece of advice for couples?

A: For couples:  Let your wedding reflect who you are as a couple and once the wedding day is under way, relax and enjoy whatever happens.  It’s all part of your story!

Q: What is your most frequently asked question?

A: “How long will we need to do hair & makeup services for everyone on the wedding day?”  We estimate  1 hr. for bride’s makeup/1 hr. for brides hair — then, 30-40 mins for each other woman’s hair and each’s makeup.  We generally work as a team of one hairstylist & one makeup artist, but - with larger parties - we will add on more stylists/artists from our team to be sure everyone is getting done in good timing.   4 hours would be the max we would schedule for larger parties.

Q: What is a realistic budget for your services?

A: For the bride, our makeup & hair package, including false lashes, trial consultation and wedding day services with touch up kit included = $500.  Our pricing and contracts are on the SERVICES PAGE of our website.

Q: In regard to your vendor category, what is the most important thing you wish all clients knew?

A: DIY makeup and hair can lead to disappointing results.  You want to look at those wedding photos for the rest of your life and be totally happy with how you look!

Q: Do you have anything you’d like to add?

A: Photographers are a great source of referrals for hairstylists and makeup artists, because they see how much better the bride and her wedding party look after being done by a great makeup & hair team!  It makes for a beautiful flawless look.  Photographers are true believers in professional makeup & hairstyling for the wedding day.

Ashley & Steven's Fall Engagement

Ashley & Steven’s engagement session in Centreville, VA was possibly one of the most relaxing and enjoyable sessions I’ve shot in a long time. Their easygoing and fun loving demeanors made for a great adventure through the gorgeous woods at the peak of Fall. Hiking through streams and lakes and over hill and dale is one of my most favorite things to do and I feel incredibly lucky that I have clients like these two, that love it as well! Take a peek at some of my most favorite images of the day!

Lessons Learned: A Bride's Perspective from Sarah

Our latest installment of Lessons Learned comes from Sarah. They had a super sweet wedding at the Collingwood Library in Alexandria, VA that we were honored to be a part of. Here’s what she had to say:

Q: Describe your wedding:

We wanted an elegant, yet fun wedding, surrounded by friends and family.

Q: What was your favorite part of your day?

A: Our (practiced) dipped kiss!

Q: What was the hardest part about planning your wedding?

A: Bridesmaid drama and mediating other people’s opinions.

Q: What did you learn that you wished you had known?

A: That there will be people who think the day is more important for them than for you and your partner. I knew this, but wished I could have accepted it more than resisted it.

Q: What was the most unexpected part of the day?

A: Last minute change of hair styling location which caused us to have to go downtown on the day of the Marine Corps Marathon. Oh! And the overflowing toilet that no one wanted to take care of. Yikes! There is always something!

Q: Any other wisdom to share?

A: Plan ahead, so you can relax the day of; always be happy with the decisions you made or, if you’re not, having made them for your fiancee’s benefit; treat others as you would like to be treated; always cherish your fiancee even when you want to hit him/her over the head during the planning process

And I just launched my own makeup line that helps every women get the perfect match by custom blending your foundation and lipstick right in the salon.

Q: Describe your favorite type of client.

A: I love working with so many people! I would have to say my favorite would have to be the ones that value what I can show them. Knowing that having the right style can make your day and give you the confidence to take on the world.

Q: What wedding, that you’ve done, stands out to you the most and why?

A: I truly have been so blessed to have so many wonderful people in my life that there are so many moments that are special. I just look forward to being a part of many more weddings.

Q: What is your best piece of advice for couples?

A: I would have to say the most important thing is honesty and trust.

Q: What is your most frequently asked question?

A: Will our hair and makeup last all night? Through extensive training I have learned special tricks to keep your hair and makeup lasting all night.

Q: What is a realistic budget for your services?

A: I would budget around $950 for a bride and a bridal party of 3 for full on-site hair and makeup.

Q: In regard to the category of Hair and Makeup, what is the most important piece of information you wished clients knew?

A: Don’t wait until the end of the wedding planning process to think about hair and makeup. To make sure you get a stylist you really feel comfortable with you want to start early, around 6-12 months out.
