Welcome to the very first edition of my new biweekly feature on some of Virginia’s best (in my opinon!) vendors. I know it can be absoultely overwhelming to sift through the hundreds of vendors in each category so my hope is that by introducing you to people I’ve worked with personally over the last 9 years, you’ll at least have some really good starting points for your research. Who knows? Maybe you’ll even find your perfect vendor this way!
This week I’d like to indroduce you to Sound Wave Entertainment and Chris Rao. My friendship with Chris began several years ago when I began seeing him frequently at weddings and I had noticed that at each of the weddings he was DJing were run smoothly, the guests had a blast, and he NEVER played any music that made me want to run away from the room (which can totally happen with some less than professional vendors).
Company: Sound Wave Entertainment
Q: How did you get your start in weddings?
A: The original owner of the company discovered me DJing at pool party in our neighborhood. He liked what he saw, so he invitied me to join him on some weddings and I ended up enjoying it. We worked together since 2004, and in 2010, I took over ownership of the company.
Q: Why did you want to be involved in weddings?
A: I wanted to be involved in weddings because they combine my love of music and my love for planning large events. Weddings allow me to be a DJ, MC and planning partner for great people on the most important day of their lives.
Q: What is one unique thing your business brings to the table?
A: We are unique in that all of our DJs bring planning experience to each event we’re hired for. We don’t just expect to play music, we’re happy to help serve as a coordinator, keeping the event moving along to the liking of the bride and groom.
Q: Descrie your favorite type of client:
A: My favorite type of client is the one who comes to the table knowing what they want, but are happy to allow me the freedom to choose the music and order of events to get them there.
Q: Of all the weddings you’ve done, which one stands out the most for you and why?
A: The Evans wedding I DJed on 6/20/09 at Evergreen Country Club was a wedding I will never forget. My daughter was born just 40 hours before the ceremony was scheduled to start, and I had been sleeping in the hospital for two nights. Once I arrived on site, I found the energy to push through and we had an absolute blast. The families of both the bride and groom have continued to recommend me to their friends and family, which has led to 6 more weddings for me over the years.
Q: What inspires you?
A: Knowing the bride and groom have trusted me with the most important event of their lives inspires me to provide the best, most professional service I can offer.
Q: What is your best piece of advice for couples?
A: The best advice I can offer to couples is to do their research and sit down to meet with all of their vendors before making the decision to hire them. When it comes to trusting people with an event as special as a wedding, you want to be able to wake up on the morning of your wedding, not worried about anything, knowing your vendors will take excellent care of you.
Q: What is your most frequently asked question?
A: My most frequently asked question is “What kind of DJ are you?” The answer: I am a laid back DJ who is NOT there to put on a show. My job is to provide the best music and coordination services for the bride and groom and their guests, without having to make myself th center of attention.
Q: What is a realistic budget for your services?
A: A realistic budget would be $1500 for up to 6.5 hours of services
Q: In regard to DJ services, what is the most important piece of information you wish all couples knew?
A: A great DJ doesn’t just show up to play music, they will work with you to coordinate an event that includes all the elements the bride and groom would like, and keep the event moving at a good pace that allows plenty of time to dance and have fun.
Soundwave Entertainment can handle even the most exotic ceremony sites (like this ceremony on an island above and cremony under the Natural Bridge below) and ensure that all your guests can hear your vows loud and clear!
Getting everyone out enjoying themselves on the dance floor comes easily to Soundwave Entertainment!
While Chris is an unobtrusive MC, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to keep guests of all ages entertained!
Knowing the right songs to pick can bring even more emotion to your beautiful night!
